We've been monitoring critical systems with Nagios since 2002. We've created numerous custom plugins, met complex monitoring and notification requirements, and monitored nearly everything that can be monitored (application performance, usage, hardware condition, environmental conditions, the temperature and performance of our geothermal HVAC system... you name it.) FreeBSD

Our founders have been using FreeBSD in mission-critical environments since before Inside Systems existed. FreeBSD might not get the attention of a Linux distribution, but we've found it meets our needs reliably, and that it's conservative development practices let us focus on more important matters.
